A RAR video file is just like any other zipped file, and contains a video that is compressed and stored inside of multiple files that you have to "unzip" in order to view them. A RAR might also be stored in one or more files without compression, and may have been saved with other options, like encryption. An encrypted RAR video file is secured with a password that can only be removed after you crack the code.
- 1Install RAR Password Recovery to crack the password of a RAR file that was created with any version of WinRAR, or other compatible versions (see Resources). It uses an advanced brute-force attack or a dictionary attack to recover the password. A dictionary attack simply tries every word in the dictionary, while brute-force tries every possible combination of letters and numbers.Brute-force takes much longer, but is necessary for more complex passwords. To recover your password, drag a RAR file to the program window and click "Remove All Passwords from the File."
- 2Download Atomic RAR Password Recovery to learn the password if it was created with the WinRAR archiver (see Resources). This program cracks passwords faster for files created with older versions of WinRAR. It also has a wizard to help you discover the best method of recovery. There is a time calculator to estimate how long it will take, plus the option to save the current state and restart it later. It is compatible with all compression methods, multivolume archive and self-extracting archives.
- 3Use the RAR Password Cracker (see Resources). It will take approximately an hour to crack a three-letter password, depending on the speed of your computer. It runs in the background, consuming fewer resources and allowing you to continue using your computer. You are given an estimate after launching the program, and as it runs in the bottom right tray, click on it to display its progress. If you need to pause the program, interrupt the search and it will automatically resume the next time Windows loads.
