Sharing a mobile Internet connection is a good way to take advantage of the high-speed data connections offered by mobile carriers. As long as you have a smartphone or Aircard with a data plan, you can share high-speed Internet access between computers wherever you have a cell signal. Sharing the connection requires an ad-hoc network to be established between all computers that will share the mobile Internet. The connection may be made via an Ethernet cable or wireless connection.
Instructions
- 1Enable Internet connection sharing on the host computer. Open the Control Panel and click on Network and Internet Connections. Next, click on Internet Connections and right-click the connection that you will be sharing (it will likely be called Mobile Broadband or WWAN, standing for wireless wide area network). Click Properties and open the Advanced tab. Check the box that allows other computers to use the host computer's Internet connection.
- 2Enable Internet Connection Sharing on clients. Client computers, those that will connect to the shared connection, must also be initialized before making a connection. Open the Control Panel, and click on Network and Internet Connections. Click Internet Options and open the Connections tab. Next, click Setup. Select the option to configure your connection manually, and select that you are using a broadband connection that is always on. Click Finish and close the control panel screens.
- 3Start the mobile Internet connection. The mobile device being tethered to the host computer must be connected via USB or wireless network. Once the phone or Aircard is paired to the computer, make sure it functions by opening a web browser or messaging program.
- 4Connect the client and host. The client and host can be connected via an Ethernet cable. This works well if you only need to share the connection over a short distance. You can also share the mobile Internet connection via an ad hoc wireless network. Ad hoc sharing can be configured in the Control Panel by right-clicking Wireless Network Connection and choosing Properties. Next, open the Wireless Networks tab and click Add to configure a new wireless connection.Courtesy | eHow
