Camera captures one trillion frames per second

MIT researchers have created a new imaging system that can acquire visual data at a rate of one trillion exposures per second. That’s fast enough to produce a slow-motion video of a burst of light traveling the length of a one-liter bottle, bouncing off the cap and reflecting back to the bottle’s bottom. 

Media Lab postdoc Andreas Velten, one of the system’s developers, calls it the “ultimate” in slow motion: “There’s nothing in the universe that looks fast to this camera,” he says.

The system relies on a recent technology called a streak camera, deployed in a totally unexpected way. The aperture of the streak camera is a narrow slit. Particles of light — photons — enter the camera through the slit and pass through an electric field that deflects them in a direction perpendicular to the slit. Because the electric field is changing very rapidly, it deflects late-arriving photons more than it does early-arriving ones.

When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, the company certainly talked up the improvements made to the smartphone's integrated camera hardware. With 8 megapixels of resolution, a redesigned lens, and enhancements to its software, it certainly meets or exceeds the needs of most casual shooters.
Still, we here at Ars have received plenty of questions to the effect of, "can the iPhone 4S replace a 'real' camera?" That's actually a hard question to answer, because individual needs vary widely. Would a professional photographer replace her trusty DSLR with an iPhone 4S? No. But, might a casual snap shooter replace a pocket camera with an iPhone 4S? It's pretty likely.

Samsung to build chip factory in China



Samsung Electronics, the world's top memory chip maker, said on Tuesday it had decided to build a plant in China to start production of flash memory chips from 2013 as it seeks to ride a boom in smartphones and tablet computers.
The plant, if approved, would be Samsung's second overseas chip manufacturing site, and reflects the growing importance of Chinese market. Samsung is also planning to build a flat-screen production base in China.
The new line "will enable us to meet fast growing demand from our customers and at the same time strengthen our overall competitiveness in the memory industry," the president of Samsung's memory business, Jin Dong-soo, said in a statement.
"China is expected to overtake the United States as the top market for electronics products with its income levels growing," said Kim Young-chan, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp.

While camera manufacturers have their work cut out for them, the smartphone industry has also taken notice. Picture quality has become important to smartphone users, which makes sense given that the iPhone 4 is one of the most popular cameras on Flickr.

Intel's Ivy Bridge vs. Sandy Bridge Benchmarks


With the Intel's Ivy Bridge set to release around April 2012, Intel has reportedly begun sending official Ivy Bridge performance expectations to its partners, manufacturers and resellers. Xbit-labs has published a set of slides that are supposedly from Intel, but are not sanctioned for general public consumption. These could give us an early glimpse of what type of performance we might expect when Ivy Bridge hits the market.
The charts show the Intel Core i7-3770, which is a has 4 cores (8 threads) at 3.40 GHz, with 8MB L3 cache going up against the current Core i7-2600 with similar specifications.

According to the chart, there is an improvement across the board with the new Core i7-3770 processor. Intel states the improvement is due to improved architecture and a higher turbo boost performance. This may be attributed to the new 22nm 3D Tri-Gate technology utilized with the upcoming processors.

The latest round of documents published by Wikileaks offers a rare glimpse into the world of surveillance products. The collection which Wikileaks calls the Spy Files includes confidential brochures and slide presentations that companies use to market intrusive surveillance tools to governments and law enforcement agencies.

World's Smartest Nuclear Tactical Devices


ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s nuclear programme has made some extraordinary progress by developing one of the world’s smartest nuclear tactical devices, it has been learnt.

According to a western diplomat, the former dictator and the then President General Pervez Musharraf, during one of his meetings with US officials, had deemed it proper to convey it to the Americans what Pakistan possessed and how the country’s nuclear scientists had secured the defence of Pakistan.

HP told MSNBC that it is reviewing the details, but denied that the problem is as extensive as claimed by Columbia PhD student Ang Cui and Professor Salvatore Stolfo.

Intel Ivy Bridge

More information seems to be trickling through to the media about Intel's new Ivy Bridge range of CPUs, including tech specs and provisional release dates.

Intel Ivy Bridge processors are due to take over from the current range of Sandy Bridge processors with socket 1155 chipsets, like the Core i7 2600K or the i5 2500K. Performances aren't likely to be pushed through the roof in this new generation of CPUs, but power use is expected to be trimmed and performance optimised thanks to Intel's special 3D Tri-Gate transistors. Plus, the integrated graphics unit apparently offers higher performances than the current HD 2000 and HD 3000 systems.

IBM and 3M Herald New Era of 3D Electronics


IBM and 3M have partnered to pioneer a revolutionary new electronics technology that stacks semiconductor microchips into 3D packages that are 1,000 times more powerful than current devices.
State-of-the-art electronic devices such as touch-screen tablets and smartphones are thin because all of their circuitry is cast onto flat, planar semiconductor microchips that are laid out side by side, then interconnected with overlaid patterns of flat metal wires printed on circuit boards. But by taking those same chips and stacking them on top of each other, they can be interconnected by shorter wires that are faster, use less space and consume less power.

"We believe we can advance the state-of-art in packaging and create a new class of semiconductors that offer more speed and capabilities while [keeping] power usage low—[all] key requirements for many manufacturers, especially for makers of tablets and smartphones," said IBM Vice President of Research Bernard Meyerson.
3D microchips have been on the drawing board for years, but the main problem has been keeping the chips on the inside of the stack cool. Today's flat printed circuit boards allow each planar chip to dissipate heat into the air, but stacked microchips instead heat each other. 3M's job will be making an adhesive that solves this problem by conducting heat away from the interior of chip stacks.
If 3M and IBM can solve the heat problem, they will be able to put a stack of memory chips on top of processor chips and then put an input-output (I/O) networking chip on the bottom of the stack where connections are made to the outside world. The resulting electronic devices will lose their large, flat form factor in exchange for small, compact cubic shapes that are easier to power and less affected by electromagnetic noise.
3M's thermally conductive adhesive will use innovative nanoscale structures that pump heat away from the most sensitive interior circuits. Since microchips are fabricated on wafers that hold hundreds of identical copies, 3M's adhesive can be coated on an entire wafer. Each successive wafer will be "glued" with the adhesive to the next one on top of it. Finally, after the 100th wafer is glued to the top, the entire stack of wafers would then be sawed into complete 3D cube-shaped electronic devices.
"We are very excited to be an integral part of the movement to build such revolutionary 3D packaging," said Herve Gindre, division vice president at 3M Electronics Markets Materials Division.
3M lists adhesives as the first of its 46 core technologies, along with connecting devices, converting, extruding, heat shrinking, metallization, precision coating, rubber molding, thermoplastic molding, web handling and 36 more.
